So, what do you start with when you put an outfit together? Is it the top, or the bottom? Is it a particular color that you go for? Do you ever start with your shoes or a bag? Or is it about textures and how you want them to make you feel?
With relatively few items in my seasonal capsule, I feel like I need something to initiate the creative process. I need that first thing in my closet that I will build a whole outfit around. Not only outfit, but a story really.
What do I want to convey?
Why do I want to feel the way I know this or that outfit will make me feel?
Am I being nerdy? Too nerdy? ;)
I love nerding about clothes, but I may actually enjoy nerding even more about how I make the best use of the clothes and accessories I already have in my closet, without compromising on how I look or how a look makes me feel. Sometimes I may be expecting too much from what I pack my bare body in…
Clothes as a shield
This is going to be a difficult piece. A personal one. This year has truly put me on trial in my professional life, in ways that I did not expect, did not ask for and certainly did not enjoy. And as Xue has recently put it so beautifully in her ode to joy and her reflections upon turning 40
This week seems like a really harmonious one in terms of what I envisioned when I planned what to wear, vs. what I actually saw when I put on each of the outfits and how each and every one influenced my mood.
Do you ever get surprised, maybe even disappointed? Is there maybe a dissonance between your original vision and the story you created in your mind and then the final result and you streading down the corridor in your office or down the street on the way to the subway?
So what did I end up wearing?
Monday
Funny how things change and evolve in my closet. I’ve just done this analysis of last year and what I’ve already sold and have currently on sale:
Part 3 - Highlights from a year in my closet
This is the third and final episode of the 2024 highlights from my closet.
This piece is not on that list, but I am selling it now. Which does not mean I retire it entirely and immediately. If I still feel like there is some cool styling where a given piece may be a good fit, I will still totally incorporate it in my outfit.
I’m talking about my preloved merino vest in dark navy, from The Row.
Yes! I’m selling it, as it is a difficult piece for me. I don’t naturally reach out for it. Why? Well, it’s a vest and the no-sleeve feature is not a function that works for me during the colder months.
There are maybe only a couple of weeks during the year, when I may be warm enough wearing the vest with bare arms and then not too hot with the merino material so close to my body.
So on Monday, this felt like a cool way to wear the vest. Cool enouhg that I may be repeating it again. I think the white shirt and the way it adds freshness in so many places works good here. Then it’s definitely thanks to the blazer that this outfit works so good and feels even better :) The blazer is so oversized and voluminous that it sort of covers up any flaws underneath.
I’m happy I’ve given the vest another chance.
Tuesday
One of the hangers hanging the ‘right’ way in my closet was a sparkly high neck top that I really love wearing during the winter holiday season.
I don’t remove it immediately from my cold months capsule once Xmas and New Year is over. I keep the top to use it also on other, everyday occasions.
Tuesday this week was one of those occasions.
I paired the sparkly top with my Tibi sheer long sleeve in black. You can barely see the glittery surface and yet it adds an interesting element. And around my neck the top serves as jewelry; a kind of choker.
As for the shoes, I really wanted to dress the outfit down, so I reached out for my Dries van Noten suede sneakers in beige. I think this is a good example of the ‘wrong shoe theory’ in action.
That was Tuesday…
Wednesday
I had an early doctor’s appointment to try a laser treatment for my foot wart that’s been bugging me for years. I only have one and have been through so many different treatments. Nothing works in the long term. It was my first laser treatment. Do chip in if you have any experience and advice in this area.
Anyway, I needed something comfy for the bike trip to the clinic, then a breakfast and work from a cafe and finally the rest of the work day spent in my home office.

BTW - Do you also light candles when working from home? ;) I try to get all the ‘hygge’ that I possibly can.
This felt so good, warm and appropriate. I had a number of online meetings and needed ‘good on Teams’ kind of result.
Thursday
Ok, so this was my inspiration for today’s outfit. I found it on Pinterest, while casually browsing through what the algorithm was sending my way as I was revisiting my “Winter outfits” board and Pinterest’s own recommendations matching the content of that board.
I just love the richness of the suede and the warmth that wool cardigan gives me. The tiny triangle of freshness in the form of the white t-shirt or camisole flirtatiously teasing with its subtle existence… Perfection!
Here’s my interpretation: my preloved wool shirt from Jil Sander + recently found 2nd hand suede jacket that I bought and wore in London 2 weeks ago + navy belt from Tibi + corduroy pants from Massimo Dutti + my silver boots from Arket.
Pretty close, wouldn’t you say? ;)
The pop of white from that Pinterest outfit is embodied here in the silver shoe, which apparently wasn’t difficult to guess for my Instagram followers:
It was yet another good outfit day. Yet another iteration of my style uniform. If I am ever in doubt or if I ever had to dress for some imaginary work occasion in the middle of the night - it would always be a version of what I’ve worn this week I’d reach out for in my closet, with my eyes still half shut.
And maybe especially this Thursday was a good example of that uniform.
Here’s just some of the pictures in my winter inspiration board on Pinteres:
Before we move onto my last outfit that I wore on Friday, let’s touch upon some…
Ups and Downs of this week:
Let’s start with the downs… So, I washed my Haikure denim for the very first time since I bought them last fall. You know them, as I’ve worn them here, here and here.
Take a look for yourself. I hope we can agree that the pants have a beautiful dirty dark blue color on every picture where I’m styling them, and not this classic blue shade :/
I’ve started a claim both with the store, Anita Hass in Hamburg, and the brand Haikure. This is not acceptable! 1 wash! Only 1! Of course at 30oC….

On the positive side, Dilling accepted my claim of their wool mini shorts that I use as underwear during the colder winter days. They shrunk even though I washed them as instructed or actually at even lower temperature. They’ve already sent me a new pair :)
Do you often experience problems with clothes, shoes or bags?
Do you make claims, especially if the unwanted quality issue happens within the first 2 years, which is where we are protected by EU law?
If you do, how do those claims typically end?
And finally Friday… :) Which is when I really wanted to give the Haikure jeans a chance to shine again. I don’t hate the new, post-one-wash-only color, which is good. I will of course wear them and wear them a lot.
Even though in all honesty, I have already looked at alternatives. Especially the Nili Lotan Shon jeans, in a similar dirty darker blue shade, would be great.
But do I need a 3rd pair of Shon pants?
Friday
I’m happy that I invited my white blazer back into my current winter capsule. The blazer is made of a thicker wool and is lined, which actually makes it more difficult to style for summer. Well, maybe to style it is still easy but wearing it during the warmer months may sometimes be a challenge.
I’ve paired it with my preloved wool jumper from COS, the Haikure denim and my black Paris Texas boots. As always, the belt is slightly off - in this case a brown suede one from Toteme.
Wishing you only good and lasting quality items in your closet, that will continue to bring smile to your face and faster heart beat.
Lots of closet joy and peace in the world,
Ewelina
Ooooooh I love the white blazer!! So fresh!
I had a wart on my foot a long time ago and had it “frozen” off but that didn’t work. I tried a few treatments and none worked. Then I got a terrible flu and had a high fever for days. The wart went away! I’m not advocating going out and getting sick, but…. Strange right?
I love your cozy outfits, Ewelina.💕 I use all of those starting points for outfit planning- it’s challenging to build from a single brooch or a scarf.
